Focused on images for ads and published catalogs, I stayed completely booked for 17 years as a freelance photo stylist. If you're not sure what that is, you're not alone. It's equal parts art director, day laborer, and magician.
Consistently working for national brands like Neiman-Marcus, Sam's Club, Bombay Co., and JC Penney, I became extremely adaptable to each client's very different work styles.
Mind reading was key as many visual types are unable to clearly express themselves verbally. I found myself knowing intuitively what clients were looking for (as opposed to what they said, they were looking for).
Due to the considerable volume of work given to me by one of the largest retailers, I fine-tuned the skills necessary to work incredibly fast which enabled them to double the number of shots completed per day, often with no on-site art direction.
Even with the doubled shot count and staff members free to work on other projects, I was micromanaged to the desperate point of no return. Literally.
I remember it was a sticky spring day in Texas just after my birthday. I knew when I left work that afternoon that everything was going to change completely.
After fumbling around with a few online ventures, I discovered a new passion…
In a short time, I was animating everything in sight! I stayed up late. I got up early. I lived and breathed animation. But, I quickly realized that animated videos don't exist in a vacuum. They are part of a bigger strategy.
In order to make better animations, I began studying various marketing strategies. And this is when I fortunately discovered Seth Godin and Bernadette Jiwa. Mind blown.
So naturally, I began working on an archetypal approach to brand storytelling!
